Amadou and the Magical Flute
Once upon a time, in a small village in Senegal, a baby boy was born. He was small and wrinkly, with a tuft of curly hair on his head. His parents named him Amadou and doted on him. However, the other villagers looked at him and whispered amongst themselves. They thought he was funny looking and strange.
Amadou grew up in a small hut with his parents, who loved him dearly. However, as he grew older, the other children teased him and called him names. They laughed at his tuft of curly hair and his small size. Amadou felt sad and alone. He wished he could be like the other children and be accepted.
One day, the village decided to hold a big feast to celebrate the harvest. Everyone brought food, and there was music and dancing. Amadou's parents didn't have much, but they wanted to contribute, so they brought a basket of fruit from their garden.
When they arrived at the feast, the other villagers snickered and whispered. They pointed at Amadou and his family, and made fun of their small contribution. Amadou felt embarrassed and didn't want to be there anymore. He wandered off into the fields, feeling sad and alone.
As he was walking through the fields, he saw a group of monkeys playing in the trees. They were swinging from branch to branch and having fun. Amadou watched them with wonder and wished he could join them. Suddenly, one of the monkeys noticed him and scampered down to the ground.
"Hello there, little boy!" said the monkey. "What are you doing all by yourself?"
"I'm just sad," said Amadou. "The other children don't like me because I look different."
The monkey looked at him kindly. "Different is good, little boy. It makes you unique and special. Don't let anyone ever make you think otherwise."
Just then, the monkey's friends joined them, and they all played together. Amadou forgot about his problems, and had the time of his life. When it was time to go back to the feast, the monkeys said goodbye and disappeared into the trees.
When Amadou returned to the feast, he saw that everyone was gathered around a large basket in the middle of the village square. They were all looking very serious, and Amadou felt nervous. As he approached, he saw that the basket was filled with snakes! Big, slithery, venomous snakes!
The village elder spoke up. "We have a problem, my friends. These snakes have invaded our village, and we don't know what to do. We need someone brave enough to catch them and remove them from our village. But who would be brave enough to do such a thing?"
Just then, Amadou stepped forward. "I'll do it," he said.
Everyone looked at him in shock. "But you're just a little boy," they said. "How could you possibly catch these snakes?"
Amadou smiled. "Watch and learn."
He walked over to the basket, and everyone held their breath. Amadou reached in, and to everyone's amazement, he pulled out a flute! He put the flute to his lips and began to play a tune. Slowly but surely, the snakes began to slither out of the basket and follow Amadou's tune. He led them out of the village and back into the fields.
The villagers were stunned. They had never seen anything like it. They realized that they had judged Amadou unfairly, simply because he looked different. But in fact, he had a talent that no one else in the village possessed.
From that day on, Amadou was celebrated as a hero in the village. No one ever made fun of him again, and he made many new friends. He knew that the monkeys had taught him a valuable lesson: never judge a book by its cover. Everyone has something special inside, and it's up to us to discover it.
