Mermaid Hearts and the Magic Pearl
Mo’s toes wriggled in the warm sand as she packed another scoop onto her sandcastle tower. “This will be the biggest castle ever!” she said.
Thatcher, her best friend, handed her a shell for decoration. “Here, make it fancy!”
But before she could use it, Mo spotted something shimmering in the sand nearby. “What’s that?” she wondered. She brushed away the sand and picked up a seashell so shiny it sparkled like sunshine on water.
Suddenly, the shell began to glow and whispered, “Find the Ocean Pearl to awaken the sea’s magic!”
Mo’s eyes widened. “Did you hear that?” she asked Thatcher.
“I did!” Thatcher said, bouncing on his toes. “Let’s pretend we’re brave mermaids and find it!”
The two friends ran to the tide pools, peering between rocks and slippery seaweed. Thatcher poked at a crab with a stick. “Maybe the pearl’s in here?”
“Nope!” said Mo, giggling.
As they searched, they came to a dark, wiggly patch of seaweed. It looked twisty and strange. Mo stopped. “I don’t think I can go through there…”
Thatcher looked at her. “Mermaids are always brave,” he said. “We just have to pretend extra hard!”
Mo took a deep breath. “Okay. Mermaid bravery!” She held Thatcher’s hand, and together, they carefully stepped through the squishy seaweed.
On the other side, they spotted a small, rocky cave. Inside, something sparkled. Mo reached in and gasped. “The Ocean Pearl!” she said, holding up a shiny, round gem.
They placed it on the glowing seashell. Suddenly, the ocean sparkled like a thousand stars. A school of colorful fish leaped out of the water, dancing in the sunlight.
Miss Lily, their neighbor, was nearby and clapped her hands. “You two always know how to make an adventure magical!”
Mo and Thatcher grinned, proud of their brave mermaid hearts.
