Grateful Hearts, New Beginnings

Grateful Hearts, New Beginnings

Billy and Sarah were new to the United States. They were in 2nd grade and were learning English as a Second Language (ESL). They felt a little nervous because they didn't speak English very well yet. But their teacher, Miss Johnson, was very kind and helped them learn new words every day.

One day, Miss Johnson asked the class to write down three things they were grateful for. Billy and Sarah thought hard about what they could write. They remembered how in their old country, they couldn't go to school because there was a war. They were grateful for the chance to go to school in America and learn new things.

They also wrote that they were grateful for their new friends who helped them learn English. Their friends were patient and kind, and they didn't laugh when Billy and Sarah made mistakes. They practiced English with them every day and got better and better.

Finally, they wrote that they were grateful for Miss Johnson, who was the best teacher they could ask for. She always encouraged them and made learning English fun.

When they finished writing, they felt happy. They realized that even though learning English was hard, they had a lot of things to be grateful for. And they were excited to keep practicing and getting better.
