Morris Mouse's First Delivery

Morris Mouse's First Delivery

The sun, a giant orange sweetie in the sky, was just peeking over Farmer Giles' barn. Morris Mouse, still a bit wobbly on his tiny feet, bounced with excitement. Today was his very first delivery!

His mum, Millie Mouse, pinned a miniature postman’s bag onto his shoulder. “Now Morris,” she squeaked, adjusting his little cap, “This is very important. Mrs. Higgins Hen needs these sunflower seeds for her prize-winning chicks. And,” she added, waggling a finger, “absolutely no nibbling!”

Morris puffed out his chest. “No nibbling, Mum! I promise!”

He set off, his little whiskers twitching. The path to Mrs. Higgins’ coop was long and a bit scary. Giant blades of grass towered over him like green skyscrapers. A grumpy-looking earthworm wriggled across his path.

"Excuse me!" Morris squeaked politely. The earthworm grumbled something about early birds and disappeared back into the soil.

Suddenly, a gust of wind, a proper whoosher, ripped Morris's cap right off his head! It sailed through the air, landing smack-bang in the middle of a muddy puddle. Oh dear!

Morris scurried over. The cap was soaked and covered in brown gloop. He wrung it out as best he could, but it was still a mess. He couldn’t deliver Mrs. Higgins’ seeds looking like this! He’d look like a right ragamuffin.

Then, he spotted it! A bright red ladybird, perched on a dandelion clock. “Excuse me, Ladybird!” Morris called. “Could you possibly… just possibly… lend me a tiny bit of your lovely red paint? Just a teeny, tiny bit to cover up the mud on my cap?”

The ladybird considered. “Well,” she said, after a moment. “I do have a bit left over from painting my spots. But you must promise to be extra careful with those sunflower seeds.”

Morris nodded so hard his head wobbled. The ladybird carefully dabbed a bit of red onto his cap. It wasn’t perfect, but it was much better!

Morris, feeling much more presentable, finally arrived at Mrs. Higgins' coop. He delivered the sunflower seeds with a flourish. Mrs. Higgins clucked happily, and Morris Mouse, despite the muddy cap adventure, felt like the best postmouse in the whole wide world.
