Starry Nights and S'mores Delights
One cool summer night Ava and Daisy sat with their grandma and grandpa around their fire pit. Crickets chirped, and the fire sparkled. The stars blinked their hellos.
Grandma poked the fire for the fifth time and leaned back into her chair, “I think it needs more lint, you know in girl scouts I was the top fire maker!”
“Oh we know hun” grandpa chuckled.
The four of them roasted their marshmallows to golden brown. Another thing grandma could do perfectly. Daisy on the other hand burnt hers.
“Hey, you know you shouldn't eat too many!” Grandpa warned with a smile, “You don't want to end up like me”
“Did I ever tell you about the time I ate 10 smores in one night” Grandpa started.
Ava interrupted “Yesss grandpa you told us this last week and the number of smores was 8!”
“Oh did I… well I swear it was 10” grandpa said proudly, “I ate too many. It was to the point where I could stand. Grandma had to roll me to the car.”
Ava and Daisy giggled with grandpa as grandma rolled her eyes.
“Next time you tell us it's gonna be 20 smores grandpa” Daisy said
“20 no I actually think it was 30 smores” Grandpa laughed back
Grandma shook her head “Last time he said it was 8, before that it was 5. It grows each year. Like the size of his belly”
They all laughed while licking the melted chocolate off their fingers. They watched the sparks of the fire float off into the night sky. Daisy leaned into Grandpa's arm, “Did you actually eat that many smores?”
Grandpa smiled. “Maybe it wasn’t that many... but the night felt big. Like this one.”
Ava looked at the glowing fire that grandma had made.
“I think this will be one of those stories we tell someday,” she said.
Grandma winked. “Just don’t add too many s’mores to it.”
As the fire faded and the night grew quiet, Grandpa whispered, “The best stories aren’t about how many s’mores you eat—they’re about who you share them with.”
And under a blanket of stars, two kids and their grandparents made a memory they’d never forget.
